The president calls out Donald for peddling a 'dangerous' mind-set
Barack Obama tends to keep a dignified silence each time Donald Trump resorts to an outpouring of unfiltered word vomit. On Tuesday however, Obama couldn’t ignore Donald’s outrageous remarks in the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub massacre.
'Look, we’re led by a man that either is not tough, not smart, or he’s got something else in mind,' Trump said in his denunciation. 'People cannot, they cannot believe that President Obama is acting the way he acts and can’t even mention the words "radical Islamic terrorism." There’s something going on. It’s inconceivable. There’s something going on.'
Speaking on the tragedy in Washington D.C., Obama used the opportunity to directly tackle Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, and his demand that he and Hillary Clinton use the phrase 'radical Islam' more. While the president didn’t refer to Trump by name in his retaliation, he did passionately call out the 'proposals from the presumptive Republican nominee for President', calling it a 'dangerous' mind-set. Hear, hear!
'What exactly would using this label accomplish?' Obama asked. 'What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to trying to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this? The answer is none of the above...This is a political distraction.'
CNN have heralded Obama’s speech (which took place live on TV) as a 'stunning soliloquy' which has 'amounted to a moment of historic significance'.
The president went on to explain how using the phrase to describe terrorist groups would actually boost their own propaganda efforts. 'Groups like ISIL and Al Qaeda want to make this a war between Islam and America, or Islam and the West,' he continued. 'They want to claim that they are the true leaders of more than a billion Muslims around the world who reject their crazy notions. They want us to validate them.'
