Women directors, such as Kat Coiro (pictured), are accountable for a quarter of the films being shown at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and organizers say women’s participation is growing annually.
Over the two week period of the festival, 26 feature films directed by women will be shown, as well as the first feature film made by a female Saudi shot entirely in her country.
Genna Terranova, the vice president of programming at the festival, said: 'Women have always played prominent roles and creative roles in the film industry. As far as directing, it seems more women are taking on that role'.
Women are also making progress on a larger scale, yet directing is still a male-dominated profession. According to the Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film, in 2012, nine per cent of directors working on the top 250 films were women – a rise of four per cent from the previous year.
Kathryn Bigelow, director of ‘The Hurt Locker’ became the first woman ever to win an Oscar in 2008. Only four women have been nominated for the award.
Terranova said: 'For any female director who is struggling or maybe doing a different kind of movie, seeing Kathryn Bigelow win that award is a very inspiring moment," she said. "It certainly helps you when you see people achieve goals that you aspire to.'
