AllSaints have taken an innovative approach to New York Fashion Week, eschewing the traditional show model in favour of hanging out with Maya Thurman-Hawke in Woodstock, New York, to make a short film featuring the spring/summer 2017 collection instead.
Who, you may ask: Maya is the 18-year-old daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, and the latest talented celebrity offspring to appear on the fashion radar. The spitting image of her mother, Maya joins the new generation of rising stars, including Lily Rose Depp, Kaia Jordan Gerber and Iris Law, and she definitely shows the potential to be as famous as mum and dad.
As the beautiful face of AllSaints SS17 collection, Maya dances about in wildflower fields, in the aptly entitled Far From Here, wearing a whimsical wardrobe of delicate broderie anglaise and tough patent leather boots. ‘The imagined wardrobe of an innocent ingénue is juxtaposed with the codes of a hard and dangerous city,’ the collection’s notes explain.
Soundtracked by Karen Dalton’s Something on Your Mind, recorded in 1971 in Woodstock’s Bearsville Studios (a key location in the film), the movie makes for a heady adventure, with killer outfits, that is sure to put Maya firmly on the fashion map. Watch it here:
‘Anyone who spends any time with Maya will tell you that she’s smart, cool and possesses an infectious enthusiasm for new ideas, the creative process, and life in general,’ says AllSaints’ creative director Wil Beedle.
As for the decision to do a film instead of a show this season, Beedle says it simply feels ‘more now.’
