Tommy Hilfiger at NYFW
This time last year he was channeling the preppy, East Coast look with the young Katharine Hepburn as his muse. But for autumn/winter 2011, the New York Fashion Week stalwart went for something a little more loose, free and most importantly, fun.

This time last year Tommy Hilfiger was channeling the preppy, East Coast look with the young Katharine Hepburn as his muse. But for autumn/winter 2011, the New York Fashion Week stalwart went for something a little more loose, free and most importantly, fun.
For his A/W11 catwalk show in New York last night, the designer embraced the nonchalant style of what he described as ‘1970s rock star’s girlfriend’ with bohemian, feminine reinterpretations of the brand’s iconic menswear. Classic silhouettes were given a modern twist with a hefty dose of slouchy, louche sexiness - and Marie Claire were on hand to take in the action.
As well as lots of chunky knits in greys, browns and olive, there was herringbone printed silk, exquisite suede and of course the rock-star of the fabric world – leather. Newsflash: The leather trouser is back but this time it’s in clay tones, think burgundy, browns and putty colours. The turtleneck was also rehabilitated by Hilfiger, worn with floppy hats, velvet blazers or leather jackets for a truly 70s look.
Shapes were kept long, with wide-leg pajama-style pants, thigh-length shearling waistcoats (think Joni Mitchell in her heyday), and Sherlock-esque capes (we want!). There’s also a navy leather double-breasted peacoat that will be top of our wish list for A/W 11.
Hilfiger’s look was completed by long, straight-yet-messy hair – the kind that looks as though you’ve being doing something you shouldn’t - and natural looking make-up by MAC.
Hilfiger’s must-haves for A/W11: - Floppy 70s style hat - Suede jacket, preferably in navy or burgundy - Herringbone print blouse - Needlepoint pumps - Pajama pants
