The Great Bum Cheek Debate: Is It Ever Ok?

Everywhere we look this summer, we see buttocks.

This is the summer of the short shorts gals, or shorties, as we like to call them. Would you believe 13 years after Kylie Minogue picked up that bum-skimming gold pair for 50p, that the silhouette would still be making waves?

It seems the price isn't the only thing that’s going up, the common theme is most definitely pockets peeping out at the front and then a surprise from behind with a reveal of bum cheek for free.

From festivals and pop-up parties to a fancy bars, look around: the flesh is being paraded. Everywhere. Mostly in denim shorts but we have also spied lace, leather and PJ pant silk too. But how do we really wear them, in order to avoid over-exposure, we hear you cry?

It's simple, really: just add printed pony skin slippers and a leather tee for weekend day dressing, or strappy heels for night time fun. 

If you look at the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, it seems to be the more skin they show the more successful they are. Talk about leaving nothing to the imagination, and why should they? If I had rock solid thighs like Queen Bey mine would be out in a booty-shaking short short too. But I don't, so I won't.

If your day job is less pop star and more PA, your best bet is to leave the denim, buttock-baring, styles for the beach. Try them in a ladylike tweed, cover up with a boyish peter pan collar blouse (very Alexa Chung) and add a low chunky heel to pass the office-appropriate test.

If the first part of this summer is anything to go by, we see the short short sticking around for a while (sigh). Next summer, we predict shredded denim all over, cut away sides and a knicker-skimming shape. Only the body confident need apply. Better get stuck into that 30-day squat challenge…
