We all know her as a 21 Grand Slam–winning tennis star, but did you also know that Serena Williams is a fashion designer?
Yes, the sporting heroine showed her new collection Serena Williams Signature Statement on the NYFW catwalk last night, the same schedule as fashion greats from Marc Jacobs, to Ralph Lauren, to Rodarte.
Supermodels Gigi Hadid and Lily Aldridge sat on the front row alongside Serena’s rumoured boyfriend Drake, cheering her on in front of a packed audience of industry insiders, including a smiling Anna Wintour.
So is there anything Serena can’t win at? The celebrity-turned-designer tag is a difficult one to shake (hats off to Victoria Beckham and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who have managed to ditch the label and carve solid, credible design careers for themselves) and Serena’s line shows a promising balance of good design and commercial appeal.
Shoppable directly after the show, and designed to ‘flatter any body shape’, key pieces included fringed suede jackets, softly draped jersey blouses and longline waistcoats – modelled by Gigi and Lily in their court side seats.
‘Throughout my life, I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries . . . whether it’s in tennis, business, or fashion,’ Serena said in a statement.
