War Child has long had a rock n’ roll connection. Remember the Help album of 1995, when you couldn’t believe that Sir Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller had all been in the same room to record a cover of the Beatles’ track ‘Come Together’? That was War Child.
The design of the River Island tee is in fact based on an exact replica of a t-shirt John Lennon wore to the Cannes Film Festival in 1971. It features the original 1969 design by Arnie Goodman and Rob Rose, who created the 'Come Together' image and slogan as a statement of peace, printed it onto T-shirts and distributed it to the local hippy community in LA and San Francisco.
Ben Knowles, director of music, marketing and communications at War Child, explained; ‘We hope people will wear these stylish t-shirts with pride, not just for the connection to a true musical legend, but as a message of peace and support to change the lives of innocent children caught in war.'
T-shirts are on sale now. Time to wear your heart on your sleeve and back a wonderful cause.
The t-shirts (priced at £18 for adults and £8 for children) are available at selected River Island stores and online at riverisland.com from June 3, with profits from the sale of each T-shirt donated directly to the cause.
