If you’re wondering what the coolest girls will be wearing come SS16, your first place of reference has to be the Marques’ Almeida show. Here’s what you need to know…
The Pretty Edgy Dresses Tulle and florals. Two of the most common factors in all spring/summer fashion collections, right? But given the Marques treatment? They’re ripped, raw and ruffled every which way into beautiful grungy, totally oxymoronic gowns.
The Hauntingly Beautiful Makeup ‘It’s a Shakespeare Sister tribute on the eye,’ MAC’s esteemed artist Terry Barber told us before the show. ‘Everything is dropped underneath the eye and slightly see-through. This girl had beautiful makeup on, then she went out, danced and sweated, and what she’s left with is actually better than the original. Rawness has to exist to make the prettiness look modern - no matter what the YouTube tutorials say, a woman is a woman, not a perfect diagram.’
The Model Downtime The set for the show was a disheveled Camden warehouse, where paint and plaster was peeling off the walls, forming a perfect pinky roughness that totally complemented the collection. Nicki Minaj was blasting from the stereo in the basement backstage area, and the models (all dressed early, in a shock fashion first) had time to chill, chat take selfies and even study for their upcoming exams.
The Clip On Fringes How to add even more edge to those cool beauties? Clip a micro fringe into each disheveled up-do making every girl look like she’s strutted straight in off the Camden streets.
The Queues Of Fan-Girls Recently the recipients of the LVMH prize, Marques’ Almeida are already tipped for the top. But perhaps the most telling measure of their success? The 40-strong line of the label’s cult-followers, queuing around the block to get into the show and all wearing Marques’ signature shredded denim. Now that’s the mark of a star on the rise.
