Kendall Jenner says she believes she works just as hard as the original '90s supermodels. Speaking to Harper's BAZAAR US in which she is interviewed by her friend and fellow millennial model Cara Delevingne, Jenner says: "I've actually talked about it with a couple of women, like Cindy Crawford, who have been doing this for a long time. I feel like social media obviously has a lot to do with how it's different. A lot of people are like, 'Oh, it's so much easier now because you have Instagram. You don't even need an agency anymore,'" Kendall says. "But that's just not true. I still had to go to all the castings, I still had to go meet all the photographers, I still had to do all of that to get to where I am now."
Jenner went on to say that her hours are also just as demanding as the original supermodels. "I still have 12-hour days, I still have even 24-hour days sometimes; I still have to do all those things. We don't work any less hard than the '90s models did when they were young."
Jenner has previously come under criticism from former models including Rebecca Romijn who said Jenner and Gigi Hadid weren't "true supermodels" whilst Janice Dickinson has said: "They're not models! They're reality TV stars! You know, modelling is extremely hard work, you have to have perfect proportions."
Most recently, Yolanda Hadid has mentioned the benefits of social media for millennial models like Jenner compared to the days when she was modelling. Speaking to WWD, the reality TV star and mom of models Gigi, Bella and Anwar said: “When I was modeling, I had to live in every city — in Milan, in Paris, in New York, I was in Sydney and Tokyo — and spend six months there to actually go in person with my portfolio and meet clients and get jobs,” Hadid describes. “Today, [social media is] free advertising and it’s global. It’s a connection to the world in a split second.”
In her interview with Delevingne, 22-year-old Jenner also revealed that she has “debilitating anxiety” that wakes her up nightly. Delevingne asks: “What in particular keeps you up at night?” to which Jenner says: “It’s funny you ask that because I have such debilitating anxiety because of everything going on that I literally wake up in the middle of the night with full-on panic attacks. Where do I even start? Everything is so horrible, it’s hard to name one thing. I just think that the world needs so much love. I wish I had the power to send Cupid around the planet, as cheesy as that sounds. You go online and you see everyone saying the worst things to each other, and it’s hard to stay positive. It’s hard not to get eaten alive by all the negativity.”
