John Galliano has today been found guilty of making racist and anti-semitic comments by a Paris court.
Avoiding a jail sentence, the designer was given a suspended fine of €6,000 (£5,200) for charges of making 'public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity.' This means he won't actually have to pay anything, but that the offence is listed on his criminal record.
He was not present for the sentencing.
The maximum fine for such an offence stands at £19,800 and a jail term of up to six months, if pursued by prosecuters for a custodial sentence.
Galliano's lawyer said outside the court: 'There will not be any fine to be paid and it is a fair and wise decision by the tribunal. Mr Galliano wants to apologise and he continues his treatment to be cured.'
The disgraced designer was arrested in February following an altercation at a Paris café, in which Galliano hurled anti-Jewish insults at Géraldine Bloch and her companion Philippe Virgiti.

Following the arrest, a video surfaced on the internet showing the designer declaring his love for Hitler to a group of girls in another cafe. Galliano was promptly sacked by Christian Dior and was let go from his own eponymous label.
