You can spot a die-hard Gucci fan a mile off. On our way in to the Milan’s Piazza Oberdan, there are several women wearing much of the A/W’11 collection (fur gilet, felt hat, maxi skirt...) despite the fact that the mercury is nudging 30 degrees Celsius and it’s sweltering outside.

But then Gucci has never been about sensible shoes or practical dressing. Gucci means glamour, something Gucci’s Frida Giannini knows all too well as she prepares to celebrating the brand’s 90th birthday

In a move away from the jewel-colours and form-fitting looks of previous seasons, she unveiled a collection of 1920s-style flapper dresses, drop-waists and wide-legged trousers in a paired down palette of black, white, gold and green. Giannini dubbed the look ‘Hard Deco’ – a reference to the art deco influences mixed with a tougher, metallic look.

Models wore stunning sheer dresses with gold, white and black sequined stripes, backless gowns with necklines slashed to the navel – a look sure to be seen on the A-list for awards season.

Despite being a very ‘evening-y’ collection, there were plenty of pieces to bring some Gucci glamour to the daytime. Collarless cropped jackets and wide-legged white trousers make for a fun and chic casual look and the sequined tops will (I have decided) look equally fabulous paired with jeans for the office (watch out SE1, here I come...).

Giannini has done it again and will no doubt be celebrated along with the label’s 90th birthday when Milan Fashion Week culminates in a gala opening of the new Gucci Museum in Florence next week. Marie Claire will be there (of course) – so we’ll keep you posted!
