Ecstatic Essex X Factor winner Matt Cardle beat off competition from the likes of Rihanna and the Black Eyed Peas to clinch Christmas number one yesterday, after selling a whopping 439,000 copies of winner’s single When We Collide in just six days.

The talent painter and decorator – who received the highest number of votes almost every week – was taken aback when the results were announced, branding it ‘nuts, crackers and crazy,’ that he had earned himself the festive top spot.
'I can't believe it. As if winning wasn't enough,’ the emotional singer revealed on hearing the news.
‘I honestly didn't think I'd even make it on to the live shows, let alone win and now be the Christmas number one.
'I can't even begin to describe how if feels. It's nuts, crackers and crazy. To think that many people have supported me and bought the record is absolutely mind blowing.’

Matt’s duet partner Rihanna made it to number two with hit What’s My Name, while the original version of Matt’s song – sung by Scottish band Biffy Clyro – soared up the charts to number 8.
And far from minding theX Factor winner covering their song, it seems Biffy Clyro are rather amused, revealing they find it 'all quite funny'. 'The whole thing's a bit surreal,' drummer Ben Johnston said. 'The cover is an X Factor version of the song.'
