Tom Cruise Opens Up On Katie Holmes Divorce For The First Time

Tom Cruise admits that he was surprised when his ex-wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce

Tom Cruise has opened up for the first time about his shock split from Katie Holmes, admitting: 'I didn't expect it.'

It seems Tom Cruise was just as surprised as the rest of us when Katie Holmes suddenly filed for divorce last year.

During an interview on the German television show ProSieben, Cruise revealed that when Katie served him divorce papers just five days before his 50th birthday, he had 'an incredible amount of time to reflect'.

'Life is a challenge,' he said. 'To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you - that's what life is... Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humour.'

Tom Cruise may have been blindsided by his wife's decision to divorce, but sources say Holmes had been secretly planning their split for some time, playing the doting wife while her escape plan was well under way by talking to lawyers and moving out of the family home.

The former couple, who tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Italy in November 2006 after a very public whirlwind romance, entered negotiations almost straight away and came to an agreement with Katie being given primary custody of their six-year-old daughter, Suri, and Tom getting extensive visitation rights.
