There’s no question that we love The Weeknd. Can’t Feel My Face is on every playlist we make. Starboy is our jam. And some days, we play I Feel it Coming on repeat. Plus, we ship his relationship with Selena Gomez forever. (We love that even though they’re dating, The Weeknd still Insta-stalks her.)
But there’s still a cloud of mystery hovering above and around this superstar singer. And a lot of it has to do with his stage name. Lucky for us, the singer just opened up about the very subject.
In a recent Harper’s Bazaar cover story, The Weeknd gave readers a small glimpse into the potential future of his stage name. Obviously, the singer has another name, his real name — Abel Tesfaye. But none of us really know that, right? We just know him as The Weeknd. So when asked whether he will 'tinker' with his public persona for his next album, he was intrigued by the idea.
'Kind of like pulling a Ziggy Stardust. Maybe I’ll retire from being the Weeknd. Or maybe I’ll just give him a break.'

Wait, whoa! That would be a big change, but it would kinda make sense.
The world knows him as The Weeknd, while Abel Tesfaye is still virtually unknown.
We can imagine that it’s a weird in-between place to be. Whatever he chooses to do, we’re right there to support him. As long as he keeps delivering powerful tunes!
In the same interview, The Weeknd referenced the mystery around him in regard to how his lyrics are quite different than how he is in real life.
'I’m not in a rush to let people know everything about me. Mystery is always great.'
Yeah, it is. There’s something romantic about a little mystery.
The Weeknd’s creative director, La Mar Taylor (who he’s been friends with since he was was 17 and starting out in music), confirms his glorious mystique. 'Abel is always going to be that guy, the one not giving away too much information.'
It’s keeping us on our toes, that’s for sure.
Looking forward to that next album with bated breath.
