'The tumour is gone,' declares Michael Douglas five months after being diagnosed with throat cancer

Five months after being diagnosed with throat cancer, Michael Douglas has revealed he is winning his battle with the disease, and is confidant he will beat it for good.

The 65-year-old was diagnosed in August last year, and pictures emerged of him looking increasingly gaunt, as he underwent a grueling two-month stint of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Now Michael has given his first interview since finishing the intensive treatment, revealing his tumour is gone, and he is certain he has beaten the disease.

'I feel good, relieved. The tumour is gone,' he told NBC’s Matt Laur of his ‘wild, six-month ride.’

'The odds are, with the tumour gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I've got it beat,' he added, in the interview due to be broadcast in the US tonight.

Michael – who has recently slowed down his prestigious Hollywood career to spend more time with his family - is married to 45-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the pair have two children together Dylan, 10, and seven-year-old Carys.

And the Oscar-winner has already started making the most of living the rest of his life.

'It's put a timeline on my life,' he added.

'I'm 66 now. You know, I'm fortunate I've got a mother who's 88. She'll kill me. She may be 87. My father's 94. So, you know, I feel good about those genes.

'But it's definitely a third act. And so you're a little more conscious of your time in how you choose to spend it.'

The Oscar-winner is set to start filming Steven Soderbergh's Liberace later this year, and has been nominated for a Golden Globeat the awards this Sunday.
