We were all shocked and stunned when we heard that Selena Gomez had a kidney transplant this past summer. The actress and singer quietly had the procedure done along with her best friend, Francia Raisa — and we definitely think it was an experience that will bond them for life. Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey, decided to share a post on Instagram that really made it clear how serious and emotional this procedure was — and how it’s changed her own life, as well.
Gomez got the transplant in hopes of helping her battle with Lupus, an autoimmune disease. Those diagnosed with Lupus suffer when their immune system attacks its own tissues. While it can be aided, it currently can’t be cured.
Teefey shared the image of the two girls holding hands at the hospital, and added a bit of insight of what the process was like from the eyes of a mother.
'For all those moments of not knowing if we were going up or going down, I can always come back to this picture and know we can always make it back up,' Teefey said.

'As a mother I was helpless, scared and all I could do was pray for both of them, Francia’s beautiful family. I am pretty sure I am banned from that hospital. Mama Bear was in high gear. Selena gained a kidney, I was able to keep my little girl, but I also gained another daughter.'
We’ve got tears in our eyes over how emotional Teefey’s beautiful words are.
Raisa is also a rising star. In fact, if she looks familiar, it’s probably due to her big role in ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager. These days, she’s working on a new show for Freeform called Grown-ish.
Raisa, who also shared the epic photo on her page, made sure to use the opportunity to share some more information about Lupus.
Without a doubt, we know she has Gomez’s back for life.
