Princess Beatrice divided opinions up and down the country and set tongues wagging – not all of them kind – as she stepped out in a rather extravagant hat at last week’s Royal Wedding.
Now the milliner responsible for the creation – designer Philip Treacy – has spoken out to defend the princess, branding her controversial headgear 'gorgeous and beautiful'.

There were certainly some weird and wonderful hats on display at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials – from feathers, flowers and frills, to Tara Palmer-Tomkinson's electric blue choice and Victoria Beckham’s navy pillbox.
But Princess Bea’s gravity defying nude creation, which towered over her head, has seemingly stolen the limelight, with critics lining up to slam her outlandish choice of headwear.
One person who did love Bea’s one-of-a-kind ruffled hat was milliner Philip Treacy, who has spoken out to defend the young royals headwear, adding he was entirely responsible for the design.

'My inspiration was beauty and elegance; it's a 21st century royal wedding,’ he said of the creation.
'They [the princesses] didn't tell me what they wanted because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful.'
Hitting out at doubters, he added: 'They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation...
'I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't.'
