'One Day' author David Nicholls joins in debate over Hathaway's criticised Yorkshire accent
Anne Hathaway may have faced criticism for her Yorkshire accent in new film One Day, but the novel's author, David Nicholls, says Anne is 'wonderful in the film'.
Critics have been queuing up to pour scorn on the US actress saying her Yorkshire accent is all over the shop, but Nicholls has insisted he is thrilled with the way the star has brought his character to life on the big screen.
He says, 'I just really hope that people can go into the cinema open-minded. Loads of British actresses go in the other direction and put on an American accent and we don't even notice.
'Anne is wonderful in the film, very sweet and funny, and has brought Emma to life in a way that I couldn't have anticipated.'
The Brooklyn-born actress admitted to the Telegraph newspaper that learning the accent was 'a challenge' and said she learnt by watching 'exotic' soap operas like Emmerdale.
