It's thought the Hawaiian beauty was travelling with choreographer Brian Friedman on her way to film a music video in the Mexican mountains when the bandits struck.
According to friends, there were 'a dozen men with their faces covered,' plus more at the side of the road who suddenly descended on the Nicole's convoy.
Luckily, the star and her crew were travelling in a bullet-proof 4x4, and were left 'shaken but unharmed' after local police arrived to diffuse the situation.
'Nicole and everyone in the car were terrified. There was lots of screaming and shouting,' one friend of the star told the Sun. 'They thought their time might be up.

'A load more men were in the bushes at the side of the road pointing guns, too. The group knew the dangers, which is why they had a bullet-proof car and security. But no one expected that.'
Choreographer Brian Friedman confirmed the dramatic reports, revealing to Star: 'We were held at gunpoint. People next to our cars… there were M16s and Berettas!'
He added: 'Nicole cursed me with this trip. It was the craziest adventure ever!'
