Mariah Carey has sparked pregnancy rumours, by abruptly pulling out of her latest film role and dropping a number of cryptic hints.

Mariah won critical acclaim for her role in Oscar-winning film Precious, and was set to take up another prestigious part in a bid to further her acting career.

But the star has set pregnancy rumours alight by pulling the plug on her latest role, a part in Tyler Perry's flick 'For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf'.

At the time an official told reporters: ‘she is not doing the movie because her doctor advised her not to. More than that I cannot comment further.' Mysterious.

And now friends have confirmed the star is expecting. ‘They are both very happy and very excited,' one told RadarOnline.

'Mariah and Nick want to keep the pregnancy quiet as long as they can.'

Since their marriage in a glittering ceremony in 2008, Mariah and hubby Nick Cannon have made no secret of their wish for children.

‘We're going to do it,' Nick told fans in March. ‘When we do it we're going to let you all know.'

And after renewing their vows in a slushy ceremony just weeks ago, Mariah hinted she could be expecting, telling revelers: ‘something else very special is on the way.'

And it seems the star has been preparing for motherhood by cutting back her hectic work schedule.

‘Mariah told her handlers that she's taking an unofficial family time break, and she's keeping her work load light for the rest of the year,' one insider said.

But her hubby Nick Cannon has been keeping mum on the subject.

‘If & when my wife is ready to make ANY announcements about private matters she will do it personally,' he announced on Twitter.
