Madonna and Nick Grimshaw threw two fabulous birthday parties this weekend that couldn't have been more different. See how they both went down...
Both Madonna and Nick Grimshaw both celebrated their birthdays this weekend with star-studded soirées. The two parties, though equally glamorous, couldn't have been more different.
Madonna rang in her 56th year with a roaring 20s-themed bash in a private villa in Cannes, while Radio One DJ and presenter Nick Grimshaw celebrated the big three-oh with a neon-lit rave across the Channel at London’s Shoreditch house.
Let’s take a look at how each party went down…
The guest list: new school vs old school
Nick Grimshaw’s London ‘it’ crew was out in full force for the presenter’s 30th. Guests including Florence Welch, Pixie Geldof, Alexa Chung, Mary Charteris, Caroline Flack and Daisy Lowe swarmed the party and threw Instagram into a frenzy by posting pic after pic inside Grimmy’s birthday bash. Some unexpected stars who were seen shaking it on the top floor of Shoreditch house were Jeremy Piven, Abbey Clancy and Liv Tyler.
Madonna’s guest list was much shorter, but it included the one and only Kate Moss. Amazing. Madge’s bash was an altogether more intimate affair with a very fashionable twist. Guests included photographers Mert and Marcus, DSquared2’s Dean and Dan Caten, Givency’s Riccardo Tisci, as well as her children Lourdes, Rocca, David and Mercy, who were dressed to the nines - or shall we say nineteen twenties…

The venue: out of town vs in town
Madonna took her guests to a luxurious private villa in Cannes for her 1920s-themed celebration. The house was dripping with opulence, like a scene out of The Great Gatsby.
Grimmy, on the other hand, hosted his bash at his ol’ stomping grounds, Shoreditch House. The top floor of the Tea Factory building was transformed into a glowing, rave-like atmosphere for the Radio One DJ and all his friends and family to get down in.
The entertainment: us vs them
Madonna and her daughter Lourdes sang their own rendition of Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose, a truly touching moment and the best surprise of the evening. Who’s supposed to be receiving the gifts here?
But for Nick, it was as if one of his DJ sets came to life for the party. A slew of pop stars grabbed the mic and dedicated a song or two to the well-loved Londoner, including Florence Welch, Katy B and Brooke Candy.
The cake: totally traditional vs totally not cake
Madge kept it traditional, but spared no expense on an incredible 5-tiered masterpiece.
Cheeseburgers anyone? Instead of a birthday cake, London grub purveyor Dirty Burger presented Grimmy with a gigantic, double-decker cheeseburger, complete with candles.
