Katie Holmes managed to smile as she left her NYC apartment for the first time since announcing Tom Cruise split - without her wedding ring and wearing heels!

Katie Holmes caused havoc as she stepped out in New York City for the first time since announcing her plans to divorce her husband of five years, Tom Cruise.

Holmes, 33, looked chic as she headed out to film a guest spot on Project Runway: All Stars in the Big Apple.

The actress, who only revealed her decision to split from Tom Cruise on Friday, even managed to crack a smile as she made her way through the crowds of fans, onlookers and paparazzi.

Holmes wore a navy shirt dress, four-inch heels with a slick ponytail and natural make-up for her first public appearance since the news broke of the Hollywood couple's divorce.

Notably absent was Holmes' five-carat wedding ring, proving that the actress is determined to go ahead with the divorce and put her marriage to Cruise behind her.

Project Runaway judge Isaac Mizrahi said Katie Holmes was professional and even upbeat during filming.

'She did great,' he told People after the show.

Tom Cruise, who celebrates his 50th birthday today, is currently on location in Reykjavik, Iceland, filming his new sci-fi movie, Oblivion.
