Katie Holmes has broken her silence for the first time since she announced her plans to divorce Tom Cruise.

Holmes hasn't been hiding away since news of her split with husband of five years, Cruise, was revealed, instead she's put on a brave face by making several public appearances, and now she's spoken for the first time, albeit very briefly.

The 33-year-old actress was shopping for July 4th supplies at Whole Foods in Manhattan yesterday when she told America's Daily News: 'I’m alright. Thank you.'

Ok, so it's hardly an earth-shattering quote but it's good to know that Holmes is doing well despite the current drama in her personal life - not that we couldn't have gathered that already.

Since she announced her pending divorce from Cruise, Holmes has looked calm, polished and happy on her various outings in New York.

Cruise, on the other hand, was said to have celebrated his 50th birthday this week in a sombre way, having quietly arrived back in Los Angeles from Iceland, where he had been shooting his latest movie Oblivion.
