Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise began divorce negotiations this weekend

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise began their divorce negotiations this weekend, according to sources.

The 30-year-old actress was snapped leaving her lawyer's office in New York on Saturday wearing a sunshine yellow summer dress, a denim jacket and ankle boots.

Celebrity website TMZ.com, is reporting that Holmes and Cruise are keen to avoid a messy court battle and are thought to be hammering out terms for visitation rights, child support and a property settlement privately.

Holmes has filed for sole custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter Suri, which is thought could be the only sticking point for Tom Cruise.

Despite what must have been a stressful weekend, Holmes found time to take Suri grocery shopping to the Whole Foods store in Manhattan, where the pair were accompanied by Holmes' new, burly, bodyguard.

Holmes, 33, will head back to work next week as she begins filming Molly, a movie she co-wrote about a single mother and her daughter.

Following on from that, the former Dawson's Creek actress will star with Chace Crawford in Responsible Adults this autumn, before hosting her first runway show at New York Fashion Week for her clothing line Holmes & Yang.
