Kate Middleton Will Attend Her First Solo Engagement As A New Mum TODAY

The Duchess of Cambridge is returning to her royal duties today, cutting her maternity leave short to attend a SportsAid event in London. Here's what you need to know...

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will be cutting her maternity leave short today to attend her very first solo engagement since giving birth to Prince George in July.

While we've seen the royal out and about – once joining Prince William to open a marathon in Anglesey where she dressed down in jeans and a Ralph Lauren blazer, and again last month at the Tusk Conservation Awards where she rocked a floor-length gold sequinned Jenny Packham number – but today's event will be the very first time Kate returns to her own royal duties, as a new mum.

Clarence House announced last week that Kate Middleton would be attending a SportsAid event today at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where she'll take part in a training workshop. She'll also get to watch young athletes take part in wheelchair basketball, CP football, volleyball, fencing and badminton.

As a patron of SportsAid, Duchess Kate's appearance will be an important one. She only took on the responsibility of the youth sports charity in April this year, to help young people build their skills, confidence and aspirations. 

This is one seriously sporty royal mum – so we're not expecting any grand style statements from the fashion icon today. Judging by her London Olympics 2012 wardrobe, we're thinking Kate might opt for jeans and a smart blazer. Though in the early stages of her pregnancy – before the news was even announced – she did play hockey in knee-high boots and a smart coat, so she may just surprise us.
