Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was only the start for Sarah Burton, she wants to take charge of the royal maternity wardrobe too

Kate Middleton’s baby bump hasn’t even started to show yet and already she’s got designers clamoring to dress her in their latest maternity threads. But first in line to the throne of royal fashion is Sarah Burton who already has a well-heeled foot in the door after creating the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress.

After receiving an OBE yesterday (Thursday) for her services to the British fashion industry, the designer was asked if she’s plans to create a collection of maternity clothing for Kate Middleton. After laughing, Sarah said: ‘I hope I will be.’

And if Kate decides to pick up a few pieces from Alexander McQueen, (where Sarah is creative director) she’ll be in good company as Sarah is also expecting and has twins on the way.

Of course Sarah’s most iconic work to date has to be the royal wedding dress and she was keen to mention just what an impact it had on her too, adding: ‘It was a real labour of love and a real collaboration, for me it was a huge highlight of my career.’

It was also revealed that this ‘highlight’ was entirely unexpected: ‘It came completely out of the blue, it was very exciting and I felt very privileged,' Sarah told the MailOnline.

Like the majority of the British public, the designer is also a Kate Middleton fan and couldn’t help but praise her, saying: ‘She looked so beautiful [on her wedding day], she’s got such an amazing sense of grace and style, it was quite easy to make her look good.’
