Angelina Jolie looks fantastic, albeit terrifying, as Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent

Disney have released the first image of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent.

In the shot, the actress looks fantastic, albeit terrifying, with the famous horned headpiece, yellow eyes and prosthetic razor-sharp cheekbones.

Production began last week in Buckinghamshire on the new movie entitled Maleficent, which tells the back story of Sleeping Beauty's evil villain and charts the events that drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.

ANGELINA JOLIE MEETS HER YOUNGER SELF FOR MALEFICENT

Speaking a few months ago, Jolie, 36, told Entertainment Weekly that, despite appearances, her character isn't all bad.

'It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that's good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you're saying they should be a villain. It's not anti-princess, but it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman [in a different way]. It's a really great script,' she said.

The film, which is scheduled for release in March 2014 also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
