An emoji movie is officially coming to cinemas

First there was the emoji keyboard, then there were the Kimojis and now... we officially have an emoji movie.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Announced at CinemaCon in April 2016, the emoji is the latest inanimate object to get the animated treatment, this time by the makers of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, The Smurfs and Hotel Transylvania.
If you're wondering just what exactly a movie about emoji looks like, well, the people at Sony have figured out a pretty genius way to bring them to life. Taking place inside your smartphone, the emoji will find themselves living in the text app, appropriately called, 'Emoji Valley', with things like your home screen being a physical part of their life.
The story will follow the hero emoji (we're putting our money on 'crying face' being the comic relief) who, for some reason, have to leave Emoji Valley and go to the world of the wallpaper, where a bunch of different apps live, with each containing their own world.
Sony even showed concept art of the emoji taking a boat trip on streams of water in a music - get it? As in music 'streaming'. We can't make this stuff up.

There isn't much else we know about the film, but Sony seems pretty excited about the idea. Considering our obsession with all things emoji, we really can't blame them. And while it sounds a bit much, a film based on a world popularised by digital characters has been utilised to great effect before. Remember Wreck-It Ralph, anyone?
So while we're a little wary of how good an emoji movie will actually be, we have to say we are uber excited to see our favourites come to life. Dancing lady in a red dress, anyone?
The Emoji Movie is tentatively titled for August 11, 2017.
