Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke, took to Instagram to share a photo from her first day on Game of Thrones Season 8, and it was not what people were expecting.
After seven seasons of wearing a wig to play the platinum-haired Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, Emilia just revealed she’s finally taking the plunge herself and going full-Khaleesi blonde for the show’s final season.
Emilia surprised her nearly 13.5 million Instagram followers with a photo of her rocking newly bleached locks and a very excited facial expression. Alongside, the photo, she wrote: 'Mother of dragons meet Emilia. Emilia meet mother of dragons. If you squint just so you might never know.'
While many actresses on the series have worn wigs over the course of the series — including Lena Headey’s two Cersei Lannister looks, Natalie Dormer’s Margaery Tyrell, and Sophie Turner, who dyed her blonde hair red for six seasons before switching to a wig for the seventh — none have been as famous as Dany’s long platinum wig.

Clarke’s hair is significantly shorter than Dany’s hair, so it remains to be seen whether Emilia gets long blonde extensions to fully transform, or if Dany will get a major haircut for the final season of the series. Like many characters on the series, Dany’s hair has been an important reflection of how she’s evolved throughout the series and a major hair change like this is a pretty big deal.
It’s unclear whether Clarke is actually ditching the wig or just dyeing her hair as an homage to her iconic character, but if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s how much we love it.
