The actor is starring in a production of The Heiress, alongside Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain.
The pair struck a pose on the red carpet before getting getting started on the Broadway show, attended by Dan's Downton castmate, Jessica Brown-Findlay.
Earlier this month it was reported Dan had refused to sign on for a fourth season of the show, sparking rumours he was preparing for a more permanent move stateside.
Speaking about his stint on stage in New York, he said: ‘New York for me is going to be one big adventure. I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months. I don’t know if I will be returning to Downton.'

Dan Stevens isn't the only Downton Abbey star with a high profile role calling.
Last week it was revealed former Crawley sister Jessica Brown-Findlay is being strongly considered for a part in the new Captain America movie.
The actress is rumoured to be in the running for the part of leading lady Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, starring opposite Hollywood hunk Chris Evans and scheduled for release in April 2014.
After Downton Abbey's roaring success in the US, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Joanne Froggatt (maid Anna Bates), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) and Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) are also being offered lucrative film roles across the pond.
