Daisy Lewis will play the live-in nanny who is brought in to look after baby Sybil. A source tells The Mirror: 'Daisy will become one of Downton’s most prominent characters. She wowed producers in her audition and they are delighted to have secured such a brilliant young actress.'

Daisy has already appeared in a number of series, including Lewis and Doctor Who. This year, she starred in the film Lotus Eaters.

The insider adds: 'Her romance with Tom will be one of the main storylines of the series. He will begin to develop feelings for her and they start a secret affair.

'Tom will have an even bigger role in the new series after becoming the estate manager of Downton.'

Gary Carr, Paul Giamatti and Tom Cullen are all joining the cast of the hit series this Autumn, too. The final moments of series four saw Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) left literally holding the baby when Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) was involved in a car accident.
