How is it 2015, yet some men still can't handle a woman picking up the bill? Emma Watson revealed yesterday that she was left feeling 'awkward and uncomfortable' when a guy rebuffed her offer to pay for dinner at the end of a date.
Speaking out yesterday as part of her HeForShe campaign with the UN, Emma Watson revealed that she was left feeling embarrassed after the guy in question rejected her offer to pick up the cheque. The 24-year-old actress explained that her date became 'tetchy' when she said she would pay for their meal, even though he claimed to be a feminist.
Saying that she 'loves chivalry', Miss Watson highlighted an important point, namely that things should go both ways and women should be able to pay for the man as well, without it being awkward.
'I think the key is: would you then mind if I opened the door for you?' she said, before adding that chivalry should be 'consensual'. 'I think it's a problem when people expect things to be a certain way, to follow a certain status quo.'
A survey in 2014 revealed that nearly 78% of people in a relationship still think that men should pay on a first date. But what do you think? Should men pick up the tab? Do you like to split the bill or follow Emma Watson's lead and pay yourself? And has a man ever made you feel uncomfortable for offering? Let us know in the comment box below.
