The singer is said to be close to quitting the show after a Facebook ‘bullying campaign’

X Factor contestant Katie Waissel is said to be close to quitting the famous talent show, after suffering an 'emotional meltdown' this week.

The singer was in danger of being voted off at the weekend, after coming in the bottom two on Sunday night’s show.

Now she's said to have become the subject of a Facebook ‘bullying campaign’, after being put through at judges houses over African contestant Gamu Nhengyu.

And now show insiders say Katie is on the brink of a breakdown, and is considering walking out altogether if the situation gets any worse.

‘Katie is on the brink - she’s a drama queen at the best of times - but she just feels like she can’t go on,’ a show insider told the Daily Mail.

‘She told producers and spoke to Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole and they are both trying to get her to stay.

‘But as outgoing and quirky as she is, she’s only human and she is in tears over the bullying tactics people are using to get her out of the show.’

Now even Katie’s mum has waded into the row, defending her daughter in an interview. 

‘Katie may come across as annoying, but she just wants to stand out. She’s learning to handle the criticism,’ she told the Sun. 'There seems to be this thing that Katie has got someone else's place. I don't know why everyone is blaming her.

‘She has a very supportive family. We don't like all these bullying tactics. I want the British public to get behind her and give her a chance.'
