It’s thought everyone from Scarlett Johansson to Amanda Seyfried, Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall tried out for the sought-after part.
But last week Gossip Girl Blake Lively was being hotly tipped to win, after being spotted dining out with director Baz Luhrmann and some studio execs in New York.
Now it seems the talks fell through, and homegrown Brit actress Carey Mulliganis being touted as frontrunner in the F. Scott Fitzgerald production.
The star is close to signing on the dotted line, with the director phoning her personally just days ago to offer her the part, according to reports.
