Britney Spears' niece is 'awake and talking' after terrifying accident

Maddie, the 8 year old daughter of Jamie Lynn Spears, is now 'awake and talking' and able to breathe without a ventilator following her terrifying quad bike accident on Sunday.

She was surrounded by her family when she regained consciousness.

A statement from the hospital read: 'She is aware of her surroundings and recognizes those family members who have kept a round-the-clock vigil since the accident. Doctors were able to remove the ventilator today and she is awake and talking. Maddie continues to receive oxygen and is being monitored closely but it appears that she has not suffered any neurological consequences from the accident.'

Following the news of Jamie Lynn Spears' daughter's accident, Britney has sent her love and support to her niece.

It was reported yesterday (February 6th) that Jamie Lynn’s daughter, Maddie, had been involved in an accident and had been rushed to hospital. Maddie had reportedly been riding an ATV vehicle and had crashed into a lake after trying to avoid a drainage ditch.

In a report obtained by People, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff, Daniel Edwards said: 'The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before [her parents’] eyes.

'Within seconds the child’s mother, stepfather and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting.

'Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.'

It’s been reported that 8-year-old Maddie was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans, and is in a critical but stable condition. Now Maddie’s aunt, pop singer Britney Spears, has sent a request out to her fans.

Taking to social media, the 35-year-old mother of two shared a picture of Maddie, and wrote: 'Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece' with a purple heart emoji.

It’s also been reported that Britney has flown home to Louisiana to be with her family.

Jamie Lynn, who is 10 years Britney’s junior, opened up about what it was like having becoming pregnant at 16, and spoke about her decision to raise Maddie outside of the media spotlight.

'She’s got such a sweet little heart,' she said to People. 'I feel like I’ve raised her with a lot of honesty, but I’ve also raised her with a lot of love. She’s a very happy, content little girl, and there’s nothing more a parent could ask for. That’s my most proud accomplishment out of anything and always will be.'

Jamie Lynn and Britney’s father, Jamie (Maddie’s grandfather), spoke to Entertainment Tonight, where he echoed Britney’s sentiments.

'All I can say is pray for our baby Maddie,' he said.
