After keeping us guessing for what seems like months, Beyonce yesterday finally gave away a clue about the meaning of baby Blue Ivy's unusual name on her tumblr account, posting an excerpt from author Rebecca Solnit's 2005 novel, A Field Guide to Getting Lost.

Containing references to Blue at every turn, the passage reads: 'The world is blue at its edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the end blue end of the spectrum does not travel the whole distance from the sun to us.

'It disperses among the molecules of the air, it scatters in the water. Water is colorless, shallow water appears to be the color of whatever lies underneath it, but deep water is full of this scattered light, the purer the water the deeper the blue.

'The sky is blue for the same reason, but the blue at the horizon, the blue of the land that seems to be dissolving into the sky, is a deeper, dreamier, melancholy blue, the blue at the farthest reaches of the places where you see for miles, the blue of distance. This light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.'

Quite some clue, then.

According to reports, baby Blue's second unusual moniker, Ivy, refers to the roman numerals IV, the number four, which is special to both Beyonce and Jay-Z.

The couple married on April 4 in 2008 and Beyonce has the number tattooed on her ring finger. The couple both share birthday's on the 4th of the month, and Beyonce's most recent album was titled 4.

Earlier this year, it was revealed Beyonce and Jay-Z had filed a trademark application to protect Blue Ivy's unusual name, after several third parties have tried to use the tiny tot's moniker for their own business purposes.

Fashion designer Joseph Mbeh attempted to trademark 'Blue Ivy Carter NYC' in early January, while another person wanted to use 'Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV' to sell a line of perfumes.

According to the Washington Post, both these applications were denied because the US Patent and Trademark Office said that Blue Ivy was the name of a 'very famous infant' and that products bearing the name could wrongly imply approval by her parents.

It's thought that Beyonce's company BGK Trademark Holdings will be granted a request to use the baby's name in the future.
