Bookies have shortened odds on Skyfall actor playing the 12th Doctor
Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw is a firm favourite to take over from Matt Smith as the Doctor, it has been revealed.
Bookmakers William Hill have slashed odds on the 32-year-old star being named as the 12th incarnation of the Doctor in the hugely popular BBC series from 12/1 to 8/1.
Spokesperson for the company Rupert Adams said: 'Ben Whishaw has been well backed with the majority of bets placed by female fans.
'It remains to be seen if it is in hope rather vain.'
There's also speculation the coveted role could go to a woman for the first time, with odds of also 8/1. Olivia Coleman, Billie Piper and Sheridan Smith have been popular bets with punters.
Outsiders include Tom Cruise and Simon Cowell at odds of 250/1.

Betting began after Matt Smith, who took on the role in 2010 following the departure of David Tennant, announced he was leaving the sci-fi series over the weekend.
He said: 'Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.
'I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience.
'Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.
'The fans of Doctor Who are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable.'
