The Carrie Diaries will be produced by Sex and The City creator Candace Bushnell, and Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage have also signed to the series.
The plot centres on young Carrie's coming of age in the 1980's, where she discovers her love for fashion and the bright lights of the Big Apple, and although it won't star any of the leading ladies in the original HBO series, other rumoured cast members have so far included starlets Blake Lively, Selena Gomez and Elizabeth Olsen.
Explaining the series, American Network CW's development head, Thom Sherman, told Entertainment Weekly: 'The focus is so much on the Carrie Bradshaw character and who she was at 16, 17-years-old.

'We weirdly compare it to 'Smallville' because it's an origin story - how she started writing, how she came to love Manhattan. Basically how we frame the show is: "Carrie at 16 found her first love and it's not a boy - it's Man-hattan."
'The other unique aspect is obviously the time period.'
It is thought the series will show how Carrie met her three best friends - Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.
