60,000 people gathered in New York’s Central Park last night to see performances from Coldplay, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and more. But they weren’t just there for a good time. From Michelle Obama to Malala Yousafzai, the speakers at the Global Citizen Festival packed a powerful punch, too. Here’s what you need to know…
There Was A Meeting Of American Royalty When the First Lady of the US, Michelle Obama, joined the First Lady of pop, Beyoncé, on stage for a BFF hug, the crowd understandably completely lost their cool. Then Mrs O encouraged the audience to Tweet with the hashtag #62MillionGirls (the number of girls around the world who don’t have access to education) and the true power of the Mich-oncé force was felt around the globe.

Malala Yousafzai Gave A Powerful Speech Appearing on the huge stage with four other young women from conflict zones, Malala’s speech was another highlight of the evening. ‘There is not a lack of money in this world,’ she said. ‘We have trillions of dollars. But the money goes to military and things that are useless for this world and for society.’
There Were Loads Of Starry Cameos… Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek, Mark Zuckerberg… CEOs and celebrities alike came together to encourage people to actively engage with local and national issues, and not just to be in the audience. Visit the Global Citizen website for more information on the causes.
