As the sun finally makes and appearance this weekend, get yourself fully protected
There’s a collective buzz working its way through the Marie Claire office today as this weekend is set to deliver some serious rays. In anticipation of it all, we’ll be switching our skinnies for skimpies and packing sun lotions galore ready for all the basking we’re planning.
As conscientious as we’ve all become about applying the factor 30 to our limbs, we seldom (if ever) think about our eyes but they need exactly the same TLC. Your blinkers are living tissue just like skin and can easily suffer from Photokeratitis A.K.A sunburn. What you don’t expect, though, is that the worst times of day are mid morning and late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. At midday when the sun is at its highest, our brow bones cast a shadow to protects our eyes – that’s what they’re there for, see?
Sunglasses are the obvious answer but as top optometrist Daska Barrett at Specs of Kensington explains, ‘people don’t think about the rays that creep in from the sides and damage our eyes. Ideally they need to be wraparound or have wide arms to combat that.’
But what you’re not VB and posing in your shades all day won’t wash with your boss? The newest thing is UV filter contact lenses from Johnson & Johnson Acuvue. Just like the lenses you’re used to but with full-time protection for your eyes.
Fed up of being so dependant on my giant glasses, I am a recent convert to lenses and when I sauntered down to see her at Specs of Kensington, Daska gave me the Johnson & Johnson UV True Eye lenses a whirl. Results are I’m a fan, a big one. So when the sun finally comes back into my life tomorrow, I can look it right in the eye (well, almost.)
