Who would have thought that Princess Leia's Space Buns could ever be a go-to hair style for the red carpet. Well, prepare yourself.

Without a doubt, Star Wars: ‘The Force Awakens’ is the most hotly anticipated film of the year-slash-decade, and while we’re pretty confident the film itself is going to be out of this world (geddit?) we’re still pretty obsessed with Princess Leia’s Space Buns. As it turns out, we’re not the only ones.

On the red carpet of last night’s world premiere in LA – numerous stars were seen sporting some intricate up-do’s. Sofia Vergara, Lupita Nyong’o, Maria Menounos and Sarah Hyland were all papped paying homage to the space opera’s it-girl Princess Leia by reincarnating her signature space buns.

Initially played by icon and feminist hero Carrie Fisher – the look itself was introduced in the original 1977 film. Her ‘cinnamon bun’ hairstyle has remained a cultural phenomenon – one of the most iconic and imitated hair styles in the history of cinema and, of course, who can forget its staring role in Friends ‘The One With The Princess Leia Fantasy’ where Jennifer Aniston gave Carrie Fisher a run for her money?

Believed to have been inspired by turn-of-the-century Mexico, director George Lucas wanted to create something different, which wasn’t in fashion at the time. It seems contradictory then that this ‘future-chic’ look seems to have taken the world by storm and is still being used today. We loved Vanessa Hudgens’ take on it at the Jeremy Scott premier back in September.

Although Carrie Fisher will be making a return in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, unfortunately her iconic space buns will not. Despite being somewhat ridiculous – it is hard to imagine her without them. It’s believed that lead hair designer Lisa Tomblin wanted to change her look to something more practical –rumour has it that towards the end of the film she has been given a new and soon to be iconic look. Despite this though, we believe that the famous Leia buns should always be remembered so we suggest you give the futuristic look a try and here is how…

- A comb - 2 hair ties - 2 small hair doughnuts - Bobby pins - Hairspray

1. Use a comb to part your hair evenly down the middle. 2. Put your hair into two side ponytails which sit just above your ear and secure with a hair tie. 3. Slide the ponytail through the hole of the hair doughnut. 4. Roll you hair around the hair doughnut and then roll the entire bun towards your head. 5. When you’ve rolled your bun all the way up, use bobby pins to secure it flat against your head. 6. Repeat the process on the other side. 7. Secure with hairspray.
