Why Go: If you are looking for a lovely, homely holiday cottage on the Welsh border, Number Fourteen, Chepstow, could be just what you are looking for...

Perfectly placed as a stop-off point on your way in to, or coming out of, South Wales, this Georgian worker’s terrace is pretty hard to miss. Just head for Bridge Street and it’s the one with the bold purple door commanding an exceptional view of Chepstow Castle.

The Look: Country-chic with a modern edge (think Habitat cushions and Tolix chairs). The 16th century cottage has been lovingly renovated by owner Susie Worthy and her husband – original wood paneling has been resorted and sits brilliantly alongside a colour scheme of warm greys and neutrals.

There are three bedrooms (two doubles and a further room with two singles) and all are light and exceptionally comfortable with Welsh blankets on hand to snuggle down under when it gets cold.

I’m Hungry: Get cooking, then. The kitchen really is the heart of this holiday cottage so pour a glass of wine, put the music on and cook up a treat in the open plan space that pours out in to a small, but perfectly formed, courtyard garden.

While You’re There: Head over the road (quite literally) to Chepstow Castle - the Norman construction that sits, authoritatively, on top of cliffs overlooking the River Wye.

And there’s plenty near by to keep keen walkers occupied too: “Many trails are close by or run through Chepstow itself, Offas Dyke - The Wye Valley Walk and The Welsh Coastal Path to name but a few” says owner Susie Worthy. “You can also explore Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which straddles the border between England and Wales where you will find the historic ruins of the Medieval Tintern Abbey”. Better take the walking boots…
