Why go?
If you're looking for a countryside escape that is more chic than rustic, then Calcot Manor is the place for you. As the original Cotswolds spa destination, it covers all bases. Luxurious countryside hotel with cosy rooms? Check. Tasty locally-sourced food? Check? Acres of lush green grounds? Check. Outdoor hot tub? Check, check check.
Stay in:
There are rooms in the main hotel as well as off the courtyard, ensuring maximum tranquility. Each room is as cosy as the next (think plus armchairs, plenty of cushions and comfy beds), but it's the little thoughtful touches that make all the difference, like fluffy bathrobes, tea and biscuits and Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products, plus some nice books to get lost in during your stay.
The vibe:
The 14th-century converted farmhouse is posh yet un-pretentious, ideal for both couples and families and is super friendly yet not over-bearing, in other words, it's the perfect countryside retreat if you don't want to compromise on your home comforts. Whether you choose to spend your weekend reading a novel in one of the armchairs by the roaring fire, unwinding in the spa or walking around the gorgeous gardens, one thing's for sure: you won't want to leave. Ever.
What to eat:
There are two options when it comes to eating at Calcot Manor. The Conservatory, an elegant restaurant overlooking the gardens, and the Gumstool Inn, a cosier affair serving up pub classics with a twist. We opted for the Conservatory, and didn't regret it as soon as we tasted the chicken and duck liver pate with toasted brioche, artichoke velouté with its bacon and hazelnut, followed by Cornish turbot braised gem lettuce, herb gnocchi, caviar hollandaise and steak with chips. Oh, and the lemongrass crème brûlée with orange sorbet totally sealed the deal.
The spa:
Of course, it wouldn't be a spa break without an actual spa now would it? And you'll easily while away an hour or three there. You can fit in a few laps in the indoor swimming pool before enjoying a dip in the outdoor hot tub in a charming courtyard complete with an open fire, which is actual heaven on a snowy weekend like the one we experienced when there.
Rates at Calcot start from £209 on a B&B basis. For more information or to book, visit the Calcot website or call 01666 890 391.
