Is Chinese herb, horny goatweed, the new Viagra?
A Chinese herbal remedy known as horny goatweed could be the new Viagra, say researchers.
Nature's answer to the little blue pill, scientists have experimented with an extract from the herb, which they believe could create new drugs to combat impotency, but with fewer side effects.
Horny goatweed's name is no coincidence as the plant has long been known as a natural aphrodisiac and now a compound called icariin has been found in the herb, which has the same effect as Viagra, but avoids side effects such as headaches and blindness.
Lead researcher of the lab experiments at the University in Milan, Mario Dell'Agli, said: 'This could be the natural Viagra. We have synthesised a new molecule that one day may be able to replace Viagra.'
Viagra prevents erectile dysfunction by stopping an enzyme known for restricting blood flow to the area. Scientists altered the compound icariin in the Chinese wonder herb and discovered that it stopped the enzyme in the same way that Viagra does.
So, just in case you were wondering, horny goatweed is stocked at all good Holland & Barrett health shops…
