A mouth watering selection of Spanish and Italian small plates that recreate the ambience of the Mediterranean
On a breezy summer evening in the centre of W1 we discovered newly revamped gastro gem May Fair Kitchen. A two minute walk from Green Park station this relaxed Mediterranean tapas restaurant serves an exciting new take on Spanish and Italian small plates ranging from gambas al pil pil to Poussin Milanese with rocket and Parmesan.
Previously a fine dining restaurant we wanted to see if their veggie and fish dishes where just as tempting. First to the table were slow roasted padron peppers with Maldon sea salt and Mediterranean olives – all as you’d expect, perfectly marinated, seasoned and delivered by our friendly and knowledgeable waitress.
We were taking our time choosing so ordered cocktails to accompany our indecisive chat – the very sip safe “Our Sangria” - Baigorri Rioja Blanco or Baigorri Rosado, RinQuinQuin, lychee, elderflower and lemon and equally fragrant “Valencian” - Bombay Sapphire gin, Mandarin Napoleon, fresh orange juice, rhubarb & rosehip cordial and fresh basil.
Decisions made we went for the very popular right now Burrata Pugliese served with baby basil and San Marzano tomatoes which was luxuriously oozing, a salad of orange and avocado with cayenne pepper lemon dressing, a zingy delight with perfectly rip avocado , margherita pizza with torn basil, a mini pizza packed full of flavour and finally seared tuna with caponata which was eye wideningly mouth watering. To finish we thought the deconstructed tiramisu would fit the new spin on a classic, a perfect end to our mid week summer evening.
We ate in the main restaurant with it’s new modern relaxed décor, all copper light fixtures and marble tables. There’s also a private dining room and outdoor terrace both good options for business or friends.
The transformation has been overseen by Amir Jati, the former head of private dining at Nobu who recently led the relaunch of May Fair Bar. Amir Jati, Service Excellence Director said: “The new May Fair Kitchen sits alongside the best of the area’s burgeoning food scene. The concept is simple, light, fresh, delicious food to be shared among friends and colleagues alike in London’s luxury quarter.”
