Carmen Electra at the1998 MTV Movie Awards
While we might be stepping back a full 12 years to bring you this snap of Carmen Electra, who attended one of the very first MTV Movie Awards, that is no excuse for this tack-tastic crime against fashion. On a positive angle though, how she got that top panel to stay up is quite the achievement!
Denise Richards at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards
Oh dear, oh dear, where do we start with this one? We could focus on the fact that Denise Richards appears to have been dunked in a vat of fake tan, or bring attention to her hair, which looks like it's been styled by sticking a finger in an electric socket. And then there is that outfit. Let's just say that tight, white and shiny is never a good look.

Mena Suvari at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards
Yikes! Who would have thought Mena Suvari was Hollywood's hottest young starlet when she hit 2000's MTV Movie Awards, fresh from the success of American Beauty? Why, you cry? Because she chose to wear baggy leather trousers and a swirly print shirt to one of the biggest red carpet events of the year. And then tried to sex things up with a flash of midriff. Nice try Mena, but there was no saving this monstrosity.
Katie Holmes at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards
Things were a tad more low-key for the 2000 Katie Holmes. Before the days of Tom Cruise, she was dating actor Chris Klein and her career consisted of that breakthrough role as Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek - sadly, her fashion wasn't erring on the low-key side. Whereas Mrs Cruise favours classic shapes and clean lines for her modern day red carpet appearances, she dabbled in a whole spectrum of colour back at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards, to disturbing effect. At least we know that the best was still to come...

Julia Stiles at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards
Fashion history lesson number one: look to exhibit A for justification of why the midriff-flashing trend should never, ever, come back. Well, at least Julia Stiles has taught us all something valuable.
Pink at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards
Ow! Pink's colour-clash ensemble is quite simply making our eyes hurt.
Shannon Elizabeth at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards
Perhaps Shannon Elizabeth was trying to remind us all how she shot to fame when she picked out this ensemble - yep, she was the one who got naked a lot in American Pie - as there is no other reason we can think of for picking out such a truly hideous ensemble. Wrong on every level.
Christina Aguilera at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards
Behind the lashings of clown make-up you should be able to spot Christina Aguilera - that is if her hideous Moulin-Rouge-gone-wrong get-up doesn't scare you off first.
Jennifer Garner at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards
Perhaps not the worst contender on our list, Jennifer Garner makes the cut simply for looking so incredibly dull!
Paris Hilton at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards
Ah, the ever shy and retiring Paris Hilton! The stylistically-challenged heiress reached a whole new level of flesh-flashing at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, wearing what can only be described as a scarf. Sadly, we don't think she got lost on the way to the beach...
Pink at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards
Now if you thought Pink's first appearance in this gallery was bad, just wait until you clock style crime number two! Committed on the 2003 red carpet, the singer teamed a cropped hoodie (two words that should NEVER be paired together), with ankle-grazing combats. Inexplicably, she then added studded stilettos. Bad, bad, bad.
Beyoncé at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards
As much as it pains us to relegate the gorgeous Beyoncé to worst-dressed status, we just couldn't ignore this putrid frock. Let's look at the evidence: sickly green hue, tacky corset detailing and a nasty sheer skirt. Sorry Bey, but not even you can get away with this one.
David and Victoria Beckham
Scarlett Johansson at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards
We're firm fans of Scarlett Johansson's chic styling here on the MC site, so how this ill-fitting number slipped through the fashion net is beyond us. Utterly unflattering, this droopy design does nothing for the starlet's jaw-dropping physique.
Samaire Armstrong at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards
Is there anything good about Samaire Armstrong's 2004 MTV Movie Awards outfit? The answer is a resounding no.
Martine McCutcheon at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards
Remember the jeans and dress trend that hit in the early Noughties? Look to Martine McCutcheon as an illustration for why this look should never, ever, be resurrected. A fast route to looking far bulkier than you are if ever there was one.
Sandra Bullock at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards
Take note Sandy - if a look can ever be termed Friar Tuck chic, then it is not a good thing. And don't even get us started on those shoes....
Victoria Beckham at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards
When Victoria Beckham first tried to win over America, she did so in debatable style. The woman now proud to call herself a style icon walked the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards in 2007 looking the trashiest we think we've ever seen her. Ever. We were never massive fans of the blonde-locked Posh anyway, but this hideous zebra-print dress and pink bra combo just screams desperation. And this wasn't even that long ago!
Ashley Tisdale at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards
Did Ashley Tisdale model her 2007 MTV style on her favourite Barbie? That's the only explanation we can think of for this truly tacky styling.
Megan Fox at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards
More fitting for a five-year-old's dressing up box, Megan Fox went all ballerina on us at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, in a bubblegum pink prom dress. This is not a good thing.
