La La Land was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture Oscar winner
Well, that was awkward.
Well, that was awkward.
After weeks of anticipation, the Oscars 2017 have finally taken place. To kick off the biggest awards of the season, the stars took to the Oscars red carpet in style before taking their seats in the Dolby Theatre, LA.
Unsurprisingly La La Land cleaned up at the Oscars after winning six awards, with Emma Stone taking home her first Oscar after receiving the award for Best Actress. The nomination was Emma's second, having previously been nominated Best Supporting Actress for Birdman.
However, the most awkward moment of the night took place at the end of the show when La La Land was incorrectly announced as the winner for the Best Picture award - which actually went to Moonlight.
In what made for rather uncomfortable viewing, the cast of La La Land had taken to the stage and were mid-acceptance speech when the blunder was corrected by the film's producer, Jordan Horowitz.
'There's a mistake, Moonlight you guys won best picture,' he said. 'This is not a joke, come up here,' he continued as he held out the Oscar award to the bewildered cast.
Jordan reconfirmed Moonlight's win to the astonished crowd, and held up the envelope announcing Moonlight as the winners of the Best Picture award to the camera.
Actor Warren Betty and actress Faye Dunaway had previously read out the winner, and are believed to have been given the wrong envelope by mistake.
'I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone for La La Land - that's why I took such a long look at you and Faye,' he explained to the confused audience. 'I wasn't trying to be funny.'
The cast of La La Land graciously handed over the award to the cast of Moonlight, who accepted the Oscar to a standing ovation from the audience.
In other Oscar's related news, Casey Affleck won the Best Actor award for his performance in Manchester By The Sea. The Best Supporting Actor award went to Mahershala Ali for his role in Moonlight, and Viola Davis won her first Oscar after receiving the Best Supporting Actress award for Fences.
