The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001 Wes Anderson’s cult classic The Royal Tenenbaums saw ‘frat pack’ favourites; Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson team up (Owen actually co-wrote the script alongside Wes). Audiences also fell for Gwyneth Paltrow’s wonderfully morose character, Margot. With that hair, fur coat, smudgy eye-liner and permanently pissed off look, a fashion icon was born.
Good Will Hunting, 1997
The film that made Matt Damon, well, Matt Damon. A beautiful movie centered on a janitor (Damon), who happens to be a mathematical genius, but lacks any sense of direction. The same cannot be said for Damon’s own career. He wrote the first script for Good Will Hunting whilst a student at Harvard. met up with childhood friend, and struggling actor Ben Affleck, who helped him write the finished script, and at 27 years old, alongside Ben, Damon won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Now that’s what you call a Hollywood success story.
Pretty Woman, 1990
Julia Roberts gives one of her finest performances in Pretty Woman. That raucous laugh, her knee high boots and obvious on-screen chemistry with the original silver fox, Richard Gere, makes this a rom-com classic.
Stealing Home, 1988

Before Jodie Foster was in Silence of the Lambs and Mark Harmon in popular TV show NCIS, they both starred in romantic-drama Stealing Home, which told the story of a middle-aged basketball player who comes back to his hometown to deal with the death of his first love. Cue tears.
Steel Magnolias, 1989
With a stellar female cast, including Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton and, newcomer at the time, Julia Roberts (this breakthrough role earned her her first Oscar nomination), Steel Magnolias was bound to get a fair amount of attention. A true story based on the screenwriter's own loss, the film focuses on the close-knit relationships you have with the women in your life.
Katherine Heigl talks family, Hollywood and rom-com regrets in our August issue of Marie Claire.
