Huh? This Friends couple were never meant to end up together
The one where David the scientist got snubbed.
The one where David the scientist got snubbed.
Lisa Kudrow and Paul Rudd were the definition of cute couple as the offbeat Phoebe Buffay and Mike Hannigan in Friends. 12 years after the finale aired we're still rooting for them to live happily ever after.
So news that Phoebe was meant to end up with another man has sent a collective 'OH.MY.GOD' to rival Janice Litman's around the office.
According to Hank Azaria who played David - Phoebe's scientist boyfriend who dramatically upped sticks to move to Minsk - the shows honchos had always planned for the former couple to reunite.
Azeria told Huffington Post about the alternative ending, admitting he's never really got over being outshone by Rudd's goofy character Hannigan.
Speaking about when he left the show Azaria admitted: 'No, I didn’t know that was the end of David.'
'The plan always was kind of to bring him back. I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill. As opposed to the other way around.'

'It actually did sting a little bit,' Azaria admitted when asked how he felt about the decision.
'Whatever part of me is David the Science Guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me, but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.'
So why did the writers change their minds? '[Rudd] certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe’s love,' Azaria explained.
'He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy,' he joked.
We would feel bad if it wasn't for the fact that Mike was just as funny and adorable as Azaria says.
