The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new, independent Instagram, @SussexRoyal, broke the record (and the app!) on Tuesday for the fastest account to reach one million followers, skyrocketing in just 5 hours and 45 minutes.
According to a report by journalist Benjamin Wareing, the account gathered around 7,000 followers a minute in the first 24 hours. Instagram crashed one hour after the account launched due to the algorithm cap of 1,300 followers per minute, slowing down and making users click the "follow" button numerous times.
Instagram resolved the cap and the account resumed gathering hundreds of thousands of followers in a shockingly short time.
Meghan and Harry are no strangers to rocking the royal boat. The account inspired frenzied speculation upon breaking off from the @KensingotonRoyal handle, which the couple used to share with Prince William and Kate Middleton. KensingtonRoyal now only chronicles the projects and wellbeing of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, while the newlyweds branch off.
The @SussexRoyal account currently has 3.3 million followers and only two posts, hot on the tails of the @KensingtonRoyal account with 7.3 million followers and 1,756 posts.

Meghan previously boasted 1.7 million Instagram followers before deleting all personal social media accounts upon marrying Prince Harry. The shared account with her husband is her personal social media debut as graduated celebrity turned Duchess.
Can we expect Meghan and Harry to break another record of the most liked picture? (A status currently given to the most pointless thing on the internet.) Surely the most progressive and (soon to be?) most followed royal couple can beat the egg post out to beat Kylie Jenner posted in early January.
We'll just have to wait and see.
